When Kronos Europe determined that its existing milk of lime tank was in poor condition and urgently needed to be replaced, quick action was crucial, because stopping the production of titanium dioxide, a pigment used in cosmetics among other things, was not an option.
KRONOS Europe, based in the port of Ghent, has been an established name for over 65 years. Titanium dioxide has been produced there since November 1957. In the early years, production was based on the sulphate process. A new plant was built in 1989 and since then production has been based on the chloride process.
Storage of milk of lime 15%
Liqson was contacted to provide a temporary storage tank at short notice. Thanks to our flexible and professional approach, we were able to supply a single-walled stainless steel mixing tank with accompanying quick connectors and UPE chemistry hoses rapidly. This temporary facility guaranteed safe and efficient storage of milk of lime 15%.
Milk of lime, also called calcium hydroxide suspension, is a mixture of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) and water. It is a white, milky liquid produced when quicklime (calcium oxide, CaO) is slaked with water.
Kronos produces its own hot milk of lime solution at 50°C via two make-up units, with a return installation to adjust the temperature if necessary. Due to the large number of flange connections on the tank, Liqson was able to offer a tailor-made solution that perfectly complemented the customer’s installation.

It was decided to temporarily store the milk of lime in a single-walled stainless steel Liqson storage tank with the following features:
- Digital level measurement with display
- 2x agitators 3kW
- Multiple flanges available for connection purposes
- Equipped with stairs, handrails and easy access for cleaning
