The port of Antwerp is fully committed to sustainable water management. In collaboration with partners, such as VITO, innovative solutions for the collective reuse of wastewater within the chemical sector are being developed.
The challenge
The chemical cluster in Antwerp is among the largest in Europe and has a significant water requirement. At the same time, the pressure on available freshwater stocks is increasing. Companies are therefore looking for ways to reduce their water consumption and to use existing water flows more efficiently.
The solution: collective water reuse
In this project, the wastewater from a number of companies is treated centrally and reused as process water. This collaboration creates a circular water system whereby water is used multiple times, without sacrificing quality or safety.
To support this process practically and flexibly, temporary storage solutions were deployed. In this regard, the project partners used tanks from Liqson, which provided reliable buffering and storage of water flows during different phases of the project.
This approach offers several advantages:
- Reduction of the use of precious drinking water
- Lower environmental impact
- More efficient use of existing infrastructure
- Improved operational continuity during droughts
Relevance for industry
For industrial players, this project demonstrates that collaboration is essential in order to achieve sustainability goals. Flexible solutions, such as temporary storage and buffering of water flows, play a crucial role in this.
Liqson supports companies in such initiatives with:
- Temporary storage solutions for water and chemicals
- Rapid deployment with regard to maintenance, peak loads or emergency situations
- Safe and scalable infrastructure
Towards a sustainable future
Collective reuse of wastewater is an important step towards a circular industry. Combining innovative technologies with collaboration between companies helps to create a more sustainable and resilient water system.
